Muralist
Val Anthony Baobaoen
Due to the rising popularity of murals in northern luzon, a lot of artists take their creativity into larger scales for the public appreciation. Murals are commonly paintings directed on the surface of a wall, an artform where Val Anthony Baobaoen excels at. Val is a freelance visual illustrator and a muralist of Baguio City. he believes that expression through art creates a bridge that connects the artist with their audience within a community. Val’s artistry serves as a narrator explaining the rich culture and history of the cordillera.
Val’s fascination with the arts began when he was only eight years old. He taught himself the art of painting and murals after he graduated from college deriving inspirations from cartoons from his childhood. Like other artistic painters, he commonly uses acrylic paint, oil paint, pastel and dustless chalk. His tools consist of paintbrushes and rollers. These resources are mostly bought from art shops but occasionally, his clients are responsible for the procurement of his materials.
Val’s Works
Before Val starts to paint a mural, he acquires data needed and conducts further research about the required project. He plans out the pre-conceptualization and design concept between his team and the client. The client then provides their feedback in order for them to plan the final concept then proceed to the application of the design. The average timeframe to accomplish a project takes a week or a month.
Val is known for his hyperrealism. It is his favorite art style that he incorporates into his illustrations. In his profession as a muralist, he creates his art based on the meticulous process of knowing the vision and desired ideas of his clients. With the guide of the modern era, he benefits from computer aided softwares to plan his concepts. He enjoys creating art since it is an expression of an artist’s soul and it is an alternate possibility that came to life. Art for Val is a product of our imaginations previously limited by our minds. Making that idea into reality is always a satisfying feeling for him despite the sleepless nights and the physical strains he and his team endured.
Val usually provides advice to other aspiring artists. If given the time, he would teach his way of art to other novice painters and muralists. In Val’s opinion, artistic skills is a branch of our knowledge that is meant to be shared to the next generation for the preservation and improvement of our society.
In Val’s beliefs, the definition of art has an infinite void of loops and possibilities, it is either subjective, objective or both. The only difference between its definitions is the creative piece of an artist should always be a resonance of freedom to express their emotions. Hence, an artist losing his identity in the process may be accepted as a sin. The connection between him and his art is met by immersing himself in a deep understanding of the people’s culture and heritage while subconsciously creating an output that creatively depicts the subject itself. He presents the story from the minds of his clients to his audience, a reflection that constructs a link between his art and the people. He believes that the output will serve as the cover page of our hardbound history. Val and his talented colleagues actively travel across luzon in the philippines, spreading their colorful artistry to the public in gigantic scales of murals.
