Visual Artist
Brawland A. Balad
Brawland is a multi talented visual artist from Baguio City. He is mostly proficient in acrylic painting, digital arts, pencil sketching and caricatures. Like all artists, art is his way to express his feelings and ideals. He started drawing when he was five years old using a pencil, drawing simple sketches from his childhood.. When he was sixteen years old, he developed and improved his talent and passion for drawing. For the past sixteen years he has been drawing and painting, he honed his skills watching tutorials and researching different art styles, techniques and procedures from the internet within the luxury of his own home with his family.
Brawland’s Works
Brawland’s materials and tools mostly consist of various colors of acrylic paints, different paint brushes, an easel and graphite pencils. He purchases his materials and tools from local art stores and with the quick access of online shopping.
It is common for artists like Brawland to sketch thumbnails as reference for their projects. Based on his drawn thumbnails, he sketches his reference into his canvas. He blocks-in large shapes on his painting or drawing and finishes with the finer details using painting techniques that he learned and developed into his own liking. An 18 x 24 inch canvas takes up to a week for him to accomplish. He stated that he is not particularly known for any style but his fellow artists know him for his cartoon aesthetic and “witty” analysis in his caricatures and his humble interpretation of what he sees from his heritage. In his own words, he shares a “messy” practice with some artists at first glance but his audience thinks it is part of Brawlands charm as an artist.
Although Brawland constantly and unconsciously urges himself to get better once he finishes a project, art is still his spontaneous way of relaxation with no restriction and parameters. Brawland generously shares his knowledge and his experience of arts to other novice artists. He believes sharing his knowledge sets up good karma for him. For Brawland, art is beautiful if it has a story to tell. The story he portrays through his art reflects his humble, cheerful and enthusiastic personality. Artists like him are never satisfied with the outcome of their art regardless of the praise they receive for their efforts and artistry. He often challenges himself as much as he can for it improves his skills and discipline. He gathers experiences through participation in art exhibits. Every time Brawland pushes his creative boundaries, he becomes a better artist than he once was with one artwork at a time. You can expect to see his artworks around the creative circuit of Baguio.
