Besides being an illustrator, she also performs the traditional dance of her Ibaloi tribe. Her performance is significant in occasional and cultural events. She started performing at the age of eight while in the field of visual and digital arts at the age of thirteen. She’s been a visual illustrator for more than a decade and as a performer for fifteen years.

Femy’s Works

Femy taught herself to be a visual illustrator. She learned visual arts from her studies and observation towards other artists in her community. Similar to others, she mostly shares the same methods with other artists and utilizes the same traditional materials and tools like watercolors, paintbrush and mixing various art media. With the aid of modern technology, Femy expanded her arsenal of creativity by taking advantage of digital illustration applications from the internet. She incorporates patterns and colors on her illustrations from the Ibaloi culture incorporating them with her style. Her whole design planning process involves being observant on the details about her subject. Based on the data she has gathered, she conceptualizes before illustrating a project. After finalizing her illustrations and presenting them to her clients and audience, she gives credits to the resource that was based on her data. The timeframe on how long she accomplishes a project depends on the information or approved details.

In the field of their traditional performance, Femy was taught by her clan from her province and in school. When performing, she wears traditional clothing and fabrics from her culture while occasionally playing different traditional music instruments.

Femy’s principles in art align to the depth of her understanding of their culture and tribe. The importance of her talent keeps their culture and tradition alive in her generation. It may be difficult for artists like Femy to show her art to people who aren’t interested in her portrayal of her beloved culture but society has learned to appreciate her tribe’s beliefs due to people like her for their unrelenting conservation of their traditions. She may have not shared her knowledge of being an illustrator yet but she taught people who are interested in the performance of their cultural dance. It’s important to teach the significance of their performances especially to the young bloods of their tribe. She favors not only a certain style in art and dance but the meaning behind the terminologies of their language. She determines an art or performance beautiful based on their meaning and symbolism behind the values and elements. She invokes the concept of consideration regarding their rights not only as an artist but a representative of the youth from their culture. Femy is a passionate and proud artist and performer from her tribe. She openly showcases her unbelievable talents to the people and what better place to present it than in the creative city of Baguio.
