Freya Jadormio
Rochelle Ann Jadormio or better known as “Freya” Jadormio is a painter born in La, Trinidad Benguet. Despite her real name, her college friends called her “Freya” because she’s a fan of a band with the same name. The name “Freya” suits her very well as the name means “A Noble Woman” meaning goddess of love and beauty, fitting for her unique perception in arts and as a female visual painter.
Freya is an acrylic and watercolor painter. She established a business called “Freyajad, Hue Alchemist Art “, where she sells prints of her artworks into stickers, postcards and bookmarks. Besides selling, she also participates in art exhibits across the country that built her portfolio and accolades. On how she perceives its importance to her community, the meaningful creation of art is a celebration of life. Artists like Freya don’t just imitate life through visual illustrations but they also put emphasis on things that matter while we are still alive. Her take on art is used for emotional support not just for herself but to her audience as well, brightening people’s spirit and validating their feelings.
Freya taught herself to draw at an early age of three when her family discovered that she had a fondness for arts. Whenever she was alone at home, she practiced the basics in painting. She improved her creative prowess by training herself and watching other artists paint while in her early stages of her career. In terms of how she broadened her creative instincts, it was in her college days when she focused mostly on watercolor and acrylic painting. She pursued her passion for painting which gave her the privilege to travel and showcase her artworks in exhibits around the nation. What makes Freya a unique and phenomenal artist is that every artwork she’s done is drawn from her dreams, deep self contemplation and children’s books.
The materials and tools that Freya uses consists of different acrylic tubes, a watercolor set, different variations of paintbrushes, pencils, ruler and specific sized canvases. Every material and tools she has are ordered online or purchased from local art supply shops. As Freya stated, the most essential tools that she has are her eyes and hands that she uses for painting.
Freya’s Works
Before starting to paint, Freya writes down her ideas in her sketchbook. She then narrows down her abundance of ideas by encircling important details. Besides her sketchbook, she keeps a “dream journal” where she records what her dreaming experiences as a source of inspiration. Once she has settled with an idea, she draws and colors thumbnails of it including its color scheme in order for her to have a full grasp on its outcome. With a concept on hand and certain preparations made, she conveys the concept on to her primed canvas by sketching with a charcoal pencil or mechanical pencil, depending on what medium she’ll use. Freya utilizes common painting techniques such as layering and blending to color her artworks. Once she is done, she applies clear protective coating on her artwork to protect it from corrosive elements which also adds a glossy finish. One artwork project takes up from a week to a month to accomplish.
Freya is known for her “lowbrow art” style, a branch of pop surrealism. Lowbrow art is an underground visual art movement. Even if Freya is proficient in her specific style, she incorporates the culture of the cordillera through her art. Providing her respects and recognition to her home land by painting their traditional attire to her characters. Another quality that differs her from other painters is her application of pastel and muted colors. Her trained colorvision and painting techniques provide an aged and surreal aura giving her artworks a soul of its own. Similarities that she shares with other artists within the art movement is their surreal style and idealism in their artworks.
Painting takes a great amount of time to invest in. In Freya’s opinion, sometimes, being a visual illustrator may not be self-sustaining if an artist is not influential due to how the market has expanded with its internal affairs, but in her artistic level, it will never be a hindrance towards her love for the arts. Freya hasn’t shared her knowledge of painting to anyone due to her hectic schedule but if anyone is interested, she can lend some time mentoring who share the same vision as hers. Her primary source of being creatively ingenuine, is that she draws inspiration from fantasy and her heritage thus a source for her personality.
Freya is meticulous on the details of an artwork. Her qualifications and expectations on what makes an art beautiful are the composition either symmetrical or not, color scheme from theory, contrast of light and darkness and proportion of a painting
Freya values the good in life, art is her way to express her appreciation for being alive. Whenever an opportunity to express herself shines towards her, expect that Freya will bask in it with gratitude in her heart and her immaculate talent on hand.
